The absence of heavy traffic, the mild climate and long stretches of unspoilt beach create the ideal setting for a leisurely holiday of long walks, sunbathing and picnicking — or a few days' rest for the overseas visitor after a tiresome journey on hot and dusty roads.

History
Named after a wreck on the Skeleton Coast
The Winston Beach House is named after the famous wreck of the Winston, a fishing trawler of 180 tons grounded in thick fog two miles south of the Ugab River mouth. For many years she was a well-known landmark and cormorants used to nest on her battered frame. Eventually she could not withstand the beating of the sea and slowly disintegrated. Parts of her engine block are still visible today.
The Winston marks a favourite angling spot for holidaymakers and can be seen at Durissa Bay, about 23 km north of Mile 108 — just before the entrance to the Skeleton Coast Park.
A day trip to the wreck is always rewarding, especially if you're an angler — but beware of driving on the salt pans here, as they can be treacherous.
